April 14-20
This week I also filled in for Jeff Mix hosting the WVBR Morning Show
on Wednesday and Thursday and I will be
doing the same next week on Monday and Tuesday. Besides the large amounts of
work, life is good. Today (Thursday) Bernadette and availed ourselves of the
warm weather and walked down Cascadilla Creek Gorge until it terminated in
downtown Ithaca. We had dinner at Viva Taqueria where we indulged in one of
the combination platters, and I combatted the heat of the day with a Margarita.
Since that time I have been in the lab working on one of the parts for our
microprocessor -- a trend likely to continue until it is due next week. Until
then, take care.
It has been a while since I typed my last missive. Things have been
increasingly busy. My job at the station is time consuming, but rewarding --
classes are taking up a good deal of time, especially ECE 574 where we are
making an asynchronous microprocessor ... and it ain't easy.
March 23-30
Last week I was on Spring Break. I worked once again in D.C. and
had a good time seeing my friends at the office. I also met up with some high-school friends and
ran some errands (my car is much happier now after getting a new tire). On Saturday,
I met up with Bernadette and her family and visited the Naval Academy and its surroundings
in Annapolis, Maryland. It was a pretty day, and that evening we saw Wayne Brady (of
"Whose Line Is It Anyway?" fame) do his improvisational best (very funny I might add). Later
that evening Bernadette and I explored the town at night and paid a visit to my best friend Dan.
We hung out at The Rams Head Tavern and The Treaty of Paris before calling it a night and heading
home to Columbia. Sunday we headed back to Ithaca for the fun and excitement ... and the week thus far has
been a blur of group meetings for various classes. The hardest part of this semester for me is
the month of April, so I'll be busy until then.
In other news, I was elected President and General Manager of WVBR
before leaving Ithaca. I am looking forward to helping to make things run more smoothly at the
station and keep it on the path toward success. I assume office April 1 (yup, it's gonna be a busy
month).
Until I post my next one, have a good week.
Once again I have been tardy in recounting my experiences. It has
been nearly a month since I last put finger to key, things have been busy and are becoming
more so each day. Accept my apologies.
February 24-March 2
It has been a while ... a lot of things have changed and I've
been busy dealing with them. To make a long story short, I will be
remaining at Cornell University another year. I have lightened my course
load and am actually enjoying this semester. My four classes are ECE 476,
a microcontrollers course; ECE 574, an advanced VLSI course; CEE 323,
engineering economics and management; and CS 213, a C++ course.
In the extracurricular domain things have been going very well. We now have a segment during my Friday afternoon shift called the New Rock Release where we debut new rock at 5:30 every Friday night (imaging for it here). Additionally, Bernadette and I have been having a good time recently doing all kinds of fun things with my new found time (Cornell Plantations, Mulholland Wildflower Preserve, Taughannock Falls, Stewart Park, The IC Overlook, Ithaca Chili Cookoff, and a lot of other random stuff).
While this change of plans was a bit sudden, I think that it will end up being for the best. I'm excited about the year ahead and looking forward to finally being able to enjoy Cornell.
I had a prelim today (Wednesday) and have a CS project due tomorrow, other than that, I'm going to enjoy the Grammy Awards tonight and get a head-start on homework for next week.
January 6-12
I'm writing this one on my 22nd birthday (Tuesday) and
this past weekend, I had the most incredible time with Bernadette. On Saturday we went to
The Franklin Institute,
The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum, and
South Street in Philadelphia and we had a great time
seeing the sights and spending the day together. That night I was treated to a fantastic dinner
courtesy of Bernadette's mom (a really great Armenian shishkebab). Sunday, Bernadette and I went
to the Brandywine Battlefield Park and the
Brandywine River Museum where we were treated to
incredible views of the Brandywine and art exhibits. When we got back to Bernadette's place
she surprised me by giving me a delicious chocolate birthday cake (I'd give you a piece, but
it can be rather difficult to download ... and it's so good, I'm not sharing!) and a really
cool bamboo plant for my apartment. What can I say other than she's the best? :-) Needless to
say, I started this week with a big smile on my face. I added some pictures from this weekend's
trip to my winter break picture page ... you can enjoy the photographic bliss
here
Later this week I'll be visiting my friend Dan at Saint John's
College in Annapolis, my mom in Virginia, and many other places along the way. This coming
weekend, I'll be picking up Bernadette to drive us back to Cornell (which starts the Spring
semester on next Monday). I might even come up to her place a little early to join in her
younger brother's birthday celebration. See you next week.
This is my last week of "vacation", however, it is, as usual, a busy one.
I have a mid-term and a problem set due before I get back to school for my winter break class,
a dentist's appointment, and various errands to attend to. Sounds like a bear of a week, but
wait, it's actually a really good one!
January 6-12
For those of you who have been keeping up with the news (and after all, who hasn't?) you'll
remember that I visited Philly New Year's Day and took some amazing
pictures ... all you have to do is click.
And speaking of "keeping up with the news" looking at the logs for the site, as of this morning,
there were over 80 individual viewers (not just hits, but actual machines) that checked out
cabic.com this week -- and not just search engines either ... thanks for stopping by!
Next week is the last week of vacation ... and the week of my birthday ... so until then, have a
great weekend.
December 30-January 5, 2002 You
can check out some of the pictures of I have been taking here,
the old pictures can be found here.
December 23-29 In other news,
I helped Bernadette create her first web site today, you can see it here. That
about wraps things up from here, have a happy holiday and I will see you next
time.
December 9-15
This week I plan on studying my behind off and making dinner for my girlfriend
:-). Looking at the logs for the site, it appears that the pictures section
is fast becoming a hit ... you can check it out
here. I'll be studying away ... so until next
time, have a great week.
December 2-8
The same projects that were due last week are due this week, so I will be busy
doing all that. It will be nice when this week comes to a close. Until then,
I'll be in the lab.
November 25-December 1
Of course in the exciting world of academics ... my semester is coming to a
close, and I am in the midst of one of the busiest times in recent memory.
Pending projects and labs include:
November 11-17
This week saw (yep, writing this in the middle of the week) a prelim for
Financial and Managerial Accounting. Other than that, I am just working on
projects for my various classes ... the 474 is coming along nicely -- should
keep me busy and off the streets. For you rabid fans of the Ed Cabic radio
program (yes, you know who you are) I'll be on this Friday from 3-7 (which you
rabid fans already knew). All throughout the week the week I will be meeting
up randomly with friends, working on labs, and pretty much doing whatever it is
that I do. Until my next dispatch, have a good week.
November 4-10
As for "what's happening this week" ... well I have a project due on Monday for
453 (which is almost done as of this writing), a project for 475 due Tuesday
(which is nearing completion), and a prelim in 453 on Wednesday (which will
require a fair amount of study on my part). Saturday will see the Cake concert
which I will be covering for WVBR (go station tickets!) ... there is a slight
(and I do mean slight) chance that I will get to interview the band ...
but don't hold your breath on that one. I am just looking forward to seeing
them in concert. Speaking of radio related stuff ... the shift is, as usual,
this Friday. That about wraps it up from this northern land where the
indian summer is coming to a rather rapid close ... see you next week.
October 28-November 3
Now that I've depressed you (and myself) let's get on to what this page is all
about, what I'm doing this week. Well, my diatribe sums it up: I'll be working
on labs. I also have some problem sets to work on. Next week brings another
prelim from 453. Hopefully I'll be able to fit something fun in there
somewhere ... if you have any ideas, let me know. Until next time, I'll be
on the third floor of Phillips, behind a monitor.

1-7 Since I am so busy, I will not be doing his regular shift on Wednesday, but
plan to be on the air from 3-7 PM on Thursday instead. You can listen to me on
WVBR FM (93.5/105.5)
Fall break is coming soon, as is more news.
This week has been a busy one (writing on Friday). A lot of things
that I needed to take care of back home, and of course, the on-line course. The best part
of the week is yet to come ... tonight I'm heading up to Bernadette's place outside Philly.
On the list of ideas for places we might be going: The Franklin Institute,
The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum, and
South Street. Needless to say, I'm pretty psyched,
and of course, the fact that I'm going to see the most incredible girl on the planet doesn't
hurt either :-)
I am writing this one after the fact (it is Sunday). This
week was full of excitement. It started off with New Year's which I spent
with Bernadette. We visited Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia,
ringing in the New Year with her family outside Philly. It was a
completely excellent time and a great start to 2002. Web-based classes
started at Cornell as well. All in all, I'm a very happy kid.
I am writing late at night on the 20th and I can finally say that
I am done. I am looking forward to taking some time off from the grind and
relaxing a bit. I will be heading home tomorrow, dropping Bernadette off
at her place, then heading to my Mom's place for the Christmas holiday.
This break I will be taking a course from Cornell on the web, possibly working,
and enjoying whatever time is left over.
Well, as I am writing this on the preceding Friday things are kinda crazy.
I have 3 labs/projects due in the next 48 hours ... and I will likely not be
getting substantive sleep until Sunday night (when the deadlines hit). Fun
times, eh? Once that is done, my path is rather clear. I have a take-home
prelim for 474 due Friday, and a Final for 453 on Friday as well. The
following week I have 475 (Tuesday) and ORIE 350 (Wednesday), and then ....
(drum roll please) ... I'm done!
Last week was busy, this week will remain so. The only thing that makes it all
ok is the incredible smile of the most beautiful girl I know. Of course I'm
talking about my girlfriend Bernadette.
You can also click here to see many of the
pictures I have been taking recently.
Sorry for the skipping of last week ... I was rather busy. This week is
no exception, in fact, this is being written on Thursday afternoon of this
week (much in the face of my tradition of describing a week before it
happens...). Life is really good right now actually ... except for the
incredible amount of work, I am really rather happy. I bought myself a new
toy this week as well ... the Canon Powershot S100 Digital Elph, a 2.1
Megapixel marvel that makes pictures so incredible, I can hardly contain
myself. I have been on a picture taking spree of late, and look here for some of the results.
So that should keep me busy. I'll be on the air as usual on Friday, and until
next time, have a good one.
Talk about one hell of a week in review. Last week, everything seemed to
be going my way. I had a lot of fun, saw a lot of people that I had not
seen in a while, and tempered my workload (last week was lighter than most)
with a considerable amount of fun. I won't go into too much detail, but
suffice it to say, it was a good week. Oh, and Saturday I saw Cake with Rahzel
and Spoon. All three acts were pretty good ... and Cake, well, took the cake
(sorry, couldn't resist there). It was a good show ... a bit less than I had
been expecting from the boys of Cake ... but still better than average. The
only bad part of the show was the fact that they did a lot of deeper cuts in a
row, so those less familiar with the band seemed to lose a good bit of energy
only building it back up when they did a barrage of hits. They probably should
have paced it a bit ...
What a difference a week makes. In the week preceeding this entry I
forced myself to take a step back and not be so completely immersed in
my work. Don't get me wrong, I still was in the lab quite a bit (with
3 labs pending, it is rather hard not do that), but I snuck a little fun
in there too. On Wednesday, I had dinner with my friend Allison who I had
not seen in a long while. Friday night saw the first WVBR staff party of
the semester, and a good time was had by all. On Saturday, I went out with
my fraternity and helped out in its annual food drive. Afterward, I went with
Alex and Art (of the fraternity) to The
Six Mile Creek Winery just down the street from me on Route 79. I have
passed by the place a thousand times, but never stopped in ... I changed that
and tried some pretty decent wines in the process as well (bottles bought:
riesling, Ithaca white, and Escapade). That night I caught
SLC Punk on IFC, an enjoyable film and
one of the few films I've seen in recent times. Today (Sunday) I had to get
back to work ... and I am writing this from the lab. However, I am in much
better sorts and ready to face the week.
I wrote last week's missive on a Saturday, and things just went downhill from
there. There were far too many sleepless nights, as I write this the following
saturday in the CSL lab I feel sick, and yet, my work has only begun. I
currently have three projects pending (474 final project, 475 lab 4, 453 lab 2)
with the last two having due-dates in the very near future (i.e. next week).
I am stressed out of my mind these days, and unfortunately, it looks like the
stress will not abate. There have been times in the past when I have
complained of not having enough hours in the day ... but usually I was just not
using my time as effectively as I could. Now, I have cut almost everything fun
out of my life, focusing entirely on my academic schedule, and even when I pull
all nighters, I am on a just-in-time schedule. I don't really know what to do.
As I did CoursEnroll for classes this week, it looks like next semester will be
much of the same. And I'm not alone this semester, it seems like almost
everyone in my classes is in the same boat ... and our professors just laugh
when they say that "this will take a long time". I really hope I don't get
sick ... that would make this process all the more difficult.
What a weekend I had ... and I'm writing this on Saturday! Friday the 19th was
absolutely incredible. The Push Stars
came into the WVBR studios for an
interview. It was awesome. The Push
Stars are three really nice guys with a ton of talent. The interview
lasted 36 minutes, had 2 in-studio performances, 2 cuts off the album,
and a lot of questions answered by the guys. Later on that night they
performed with Kenli Mattus, and
Antigone Rising at the Haunt. Avid readers of the news will remember the excellent
shows of Kenli in the past, and Friday night was no exception. All three acts sounded
great and a bunch of WVBR kids showed up to make the night one of the most fun
in recent memory. The imaging page has been updated to
include the interview in a streamable format (it is rather large ...).
In the "cool gadgets" department, my old StarTAC died ... or more accurately,
snapped into oblivion. As my cell phone is my primary means of communication,
I needed to get a new one. Thankfully, Mom came to the rescue with an early
present for the holidays, a Motorola V. Series 60c phone. This thing defines cool, it can check my e-mail,
dial phone numbers with my voice, surf the web, record voice messages in memory,
and all around look cool. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy about it.
So, you ask, "Isn't this supposed to be about the week dated 10/21-10/27?".
Right you are. This week will see a prelim in ECE 475 (Tuesday in-class) and a
project in ECE 474 (due Monday). Also, ECE 453 has threatened the release of
the next project this week ... so we shall see. Between all that, I should be
kept nicely out of trouble. Beyond that, things are very much unplanned, and
if you're lucky, you'll hear all about it in about 168 hours.
This week I should be fairly busy ... but there are a lot of good
things happening. Tuesday I have a prelim, which is not one of those good
things, but as the week continues, life gets better. Wednesday night we're
having an Exec dinner at the Chariot for the station, which should be a lot of
fun. Friday is a big day, the Push
Stars are coming to Ithaca, and more importantly they are coming to WVBR.
I will be interviewing them around 6:30 on air (during my normal shift from
3-7), and they may even perform live. I made a promo
that will be airing all week on the station to hype things up and am very much
looking forward to meeting the band. If you like that promo, you can see
my updated imaging page, where all things Ed Cabic in
the WVBR style can be seen. Beyond this Friday my schedule is less
concrete ... but hopefully it will involve large quantities of fun. Until
then, have a great week.
It has been a while since I have written about what has been happening in my life.
This is a result of what have been some of the most intense workloads I have ever
experienced. I have been kept very busy with labs for ECE 474
(my Digital Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit design course), ECE 475
(my computer architecuture course), and ECE 453
(my analog integrated circuits class). I have been finding that taking three project classes
will take up pretty much all of your time. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying my
classes more than I have in a long time, and have fun working on the projects, but
it has been an all consuming task.
Outside of classes, there have been a few things that have been filling up the
remainder of my schedule. Last week I did my first two morning shows for WVBR,
something I have wanted to do for a very long time. I also did an afternoon shift
on Friday as usual, so I ended up doing three shifts in two days. Surprisingly,
getting up at 4:30 in the mornings to do the show was not as bad as I had expected
it would be. I also filled in for the Rock and Roll Extravaganza Sunday night with
Steve Forti, we programmed it with a lot of fun music, and had a good time doing it.
This Friday I will be doing my afternoon shift as usual from 3-7 and this weekend I will
be visited by my father who will be on the Cornell campus for Homecoming. This weekend
there are a lot of things going on, however, as has been the case, I will likely be focusing
on my projects for my various project classes. Tuesday, I have a prelim for my Financial
and Managerial Accounting class (ORIE 350), so I will also be studying for that.
Also, for those of you who listen to the radio show, I can let you in on a little advance
information. Next Friday, the Push Stars will be coming to the WVBR studios and I will
be interviewing them live on the air. The tentative time for the interview is around 6:30.
That's all for now ... until next time.
So school begins again, and so does my news page. Summer
was a very busy time ... the SF trip is listed below with all the
pictures. Other than that, I worked a lot, took some classes, and spent a
lot of time with friends. A good summer.
This week I spent a lot of time on Ho Plaza promoting for WVBR (all told, about
32 hours on the plaza) in what has turned out to be one of the most successful
training drives in recent memory (315 people signed up to be reminded about our
information sessions). Classes also start for me this week on Thursday; I
have a full plate. You can see my schedule here.
I am finally back on the net after much wrestling with my computer (my video
card died). More from me later.
I am done! Done! Done! (ok, so maybe just for a week, but hey,
let me celebrate). Truth be told, I will be starting work next week, and
starting my web-based summer classes at UMUC
next week as well. This week is dedicated to the art of slacking ... I
will be spending it with my best friend Dan, some music, some books, and a whole
lot of fun. That's about it ... I will be slacking after all. See
you next week.
This entry was written after the fact ... truth be told, I was
too busy last week to do it. I had a shift on Monday (mentioned
previously) and everything well. The studying went smoothly, and exams
were challenging (hey, I go to Cornell, what do you expect). I was done on
Thursday ... and that night I began spending the last time I had with some close
friends who are graduating. I wish I had more time to spend with them -
and I hope to see them again soon. For all of them, I wish you the best of
luck in life and all the success in the world. The week was ended with
packing ...
So the studying begins. But not before some steam gets let
off. I did introduce Stroke 9 last
Friday, and had an absolutely amazing time. They played some songs from
their forthcoming album, and even covered Weezer's "My Name is Jonas"
from the blue album. The weekend was fun and relaxing too. On Monday
(when this date range starts interestingly enough) we had the WVBR
Banquet. It was a chance to say goodbye to some of the seniors at the
station who have become close friends over the years. And on Tuesday we
had Spring Fever 2001, a WVBR show at the Haunt
featuring Kenli Mattus (who I've
mentioned here before) and 3, a band from Woodstock, NY. Here too I was an
MC, kicking off the night. Both bands were incredible, the station looked
great, and a fun time was had by all. Coming up for the remainder of this
week: the dull tedium of studying. That's right folks, it is Cornell
University's study week, and low and behold, I have to study. The
upside: summer starts for me on the seventeenth! Look for my second to
last show this Thursday afternoon, and my final shift of the semester will most
likely be next Monday. Until then, enjoy the warm weather because I don't
have the time.
This should be a pretty good week. All I have left to do is my
final project for EE/CS 314 and a problem set for EE 310. Then I am
done. Friday is Slope Day here at Cornell, and I will be helping WVBR MC
the Stroke 9 concert. Who knows, I may even get a chance to hang backstage
with the band. Speaking of VBR stuff, I have just added an imaging
page to provide easy access to some of the imaging at the station that I
have helped with, or is for me. Let me know what you think.
This week sure feels nice. As I am writing this it is 82°F
outside, spring has finally shown itself. While I have a 314 project, and
a prelim in 310, I'm a pretty happy guy. Share in the revelry on Monday,
I'll be on the air from 3-7 (to make room for the prelim) and you might just win
something with the artist of the day promotion.
Hopefully this week will be punctuated with reading out in wide open spaces, and
counting down the days until summer (which starts for me on the evening of May
17). More news as it happens....
A roller coaster week...began with relief that the previous week
was over, then it became trying, and by the end of the week I was hanging out
with Kenli Mattus, a truly amazing
rock artist we're playing on WVBR. We
are having the WVBR Spring Fever concert with him at The
Haunt on May 8 -- definitely a show worth checking out (I know I'll be
there).
This is quite possibly the busiest week I have had so far this
year. Three problem sets, a prelim, a paper, a project, and a partridge in a
pear tree. I did my airshift
on Tuesday to clear up the end of the week so I could study. So far this
week, I have been getting to sleep around 3-4 AM. Not fun. On the
positive side, I have yet another piece of imaging from WVBR. On this one
I did the voicing for a promotion we are doing this month called "The
Artist of the Day". Kudos to Brian Mack and Pauline from WVBR's Creative
Services department for a job well done.
I put up the news a little late this week .. so for those of you
who missed it, the EdCast was on this past Monday (I will not be on my usual
Thursday time). This Friday I have a prelim in EE
310, so studying for that is devouring most of my time this week.
Friday night marks yet another WVBR staff party, I plan on having a lot of fun
with the staff of the best radio station in the world. Other than that, I
have a paper for History 268 due next week, and a prelim in EE
302 next week as well. Alas, the partying on Friday night will be
short lived. Well it is back to the books for me, more news next week.
And I'm back...here's the annoying part. I leave Maryland,
it is 50° outside. I arrive in New York, it is snowing. Talk about
adding insult to injury. Well getting back up here made me realize that
while I was having fun over Spring Break, I was not doing work, and the work was
not going away (never seems to, no mater how much I wish it would). So, I have
some problem sets to tackle this week as well as a EE/CS 314 project to
tackle. That should keep me busy. For you loyal listeners, the
EdCast should be on Thursday this week as usual. This weekend is
parent's weekend at my fraternity, so my
parents will be coming up for the festivities. Other than that, not too much
happening. More in a week.
Spring Break! The first weekend I went with my best friend
Dan to Atlantic City where we both had a lot of fun, and the casinos were, in
the end, victorious. The following week I worked for a few days doing my
consulting job in Washington; it was good to see my friends down there. My
father and I stopped by some brewpubs in Maryland, specifically Ellicott
Mills Brewing Co. and Bare Bones
Grill and Brewery. I also visited Hops,
a brewpub/restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia with my mother. All of the
places I went to were very nice, and the beers at each place were pretty good,
especially the Ales I tried.
I won the election for Vice President in Charge of Station
Training at WVBR, I'm very excited about the
office and look forward to assuming the post next month. This is a busy
week with problem sets and prelims taking up my time. Next week: Spring
Break.
Yet another busy week. I have an EE 310 prelim on Friday that will be keeping me off the streets and numerous homework assignments in the pipeline. This week I am also running for the position of Vice President in Charge of Station Training at WVBR. Elections are this weekend. As for my radio shift, I will be on this Thursday as usual from 3-7 PM. That's about all for now. More next week.
This week will be busy . . . what else is new. I have a prelim on Tuesday
night, a lab due the same day, and a problem set due the following day,
all for EE 302. I also have a
project due for EE 314
on Thursday, and a problem set for EE
310 due on Friday. Additionally, I have a good amount of reading to do
for History 268 (sorry, no website for that one). Needless to say, I'm
feeling a little swamped. Work pretty much dominates my schedule this
week, so there is not too much to report in the fun department. Oh well, better
luck next week. The Ed-Cast that you have come to love and desire will be
on Thursday as you have come to expect.
This should be
a busy week . . . a lot of problem sets and other assorted fun to keep me
company. Not too much happening otherwise. The Ed-Cast will be on
its usual Thursday time (3-7 PM) and features the brand new imaging . . .
including the Ed drop
which I have placed up on the site for your listening pleasure. This
coming weekend I'm going out to the movies as a study break with a friend, and
possibly seeing the Skits-O-Phrenics
and the Whistling Shrimp perform if
I have time. That's the news for now, more next week.
So life has a
way of throwing you curves . . . it looks like I will not be going to California
for spring break, plans fell through. So what am I doing for spring
break? Good question! Maybe a little of nothing, maybe a little
work, maybe a little of both. I'll keep you posted. Last week was an
absolutely excellent week for WVBR Jok Training, as of this dispatch I have 50
trainees signed up, 16 of which have already gone through the first step of the
three step training process. I will be having more sessions in the near
future; this turnout is absolutely phenomenal. The info sessions that preceded
Jok training were also very successful, my going up to random people in Willard
Straight hall seems to have worked! Well enough recapping last week . . .
what's happening this week? Work, lots of it. I have a prelim this
Friday in EE 310 and numerous problem sets, projects, and assorted headaches
in-between. I will be on the air during the normal times for the Ed-cast:
3-7 PM on Thursday. Not only will you get to hear me, but the station just
started using new imaging this week . . . I even have an Ed drop - fun
stuff. Well, I should get back to all this work I've been amassing . . .
until next week, have a good one.
Well, the
workload has picked up. No more unrepentant bar-hopping for Ed.
Classes are going well, but for some reason they feel compelled to assign
readings, problem sets, and projects. I can't say that I am a big fan of
that. This is the week which officially begins training season at WVBR-FM
with information sessions Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:00 in
Rockefeller 102 on the beautiful Cornell campus. You can see wonderful me
extolling the virtues of the world's best radio
station and informing everyone how they too can become a part of it.
Other than that, pretty normal week. Same Thursday 3-7 radio shift as
usual, broadcast in stereophonic sound for your listening enjoyment. I
will probably also schedule a training session for new Joks (our word for DJ at
the station) either late in the week (Friday) or on the weekend. It will
be a busy week, but a rewarding one.
This week I was a bit behind in putting up
my news, sorry, I was too busy having fun. Luckily, this week was not too
taxing in the homework department. I got a chance to see some friends who
I had not seen in a long time, and made my first voyages to Dino's
and The Palms in Collegetown and to The
Rongovian Embassy (the Rongo for short) in Trumansburg. Dino's and The Rongo
had a great atmosphere -- nice places to sit down with friends, good music (in
the case of the Rongo, live music) and a pretty good selection of beers.
When I went to the Palms on Friday it was packed -- one could barely walk
around. Note to self, don't go there on Fridays! Also this week I
made plans for Spring Break! I am visiting an awesome friend in Sacramento,
California. It is going to be a fanatastic week -- I want it to be March
now!
The first week
of school. I return to the same old grind again! Many courses, as usual -- and
because I like to fufill your every voyeuristic pleasure, here is my schedule. I will
be doing a radio show this week on Thursday, which looks like it will be my
semi-permanent shift for the semester. As always, you can hear me on 93.5
WVBR.
This week has
primarily been devoted to rush at my fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, Omicron Zeta. The downside is
the endless meetings, the upside is the partying and meeting new people.
However, the really big news here is the first day of this week, the 15th. I
turned twenty-one. I celebrated with my best friend Dan in Annapolis, Maryland
where he goes to school. Other than that,
this has been a pretty slow week in preparation for the week to come.
Usually, I
write the news before it happens. Not this week -- I was away in San Francisco,
California visiting my brother and having a wonderful time. Here's how the week
went:
Monday, January 8
That's about it . . .
I traveled from BWI to SFO via Phoenix
on Southwest. It was a long trip, but it got us there around 3:00 P.M.
Pacific. We met up with my brother, and that evening he and I went to El Rio,
a bar where he DJs occasionally and hung out until the wee hours of the
morning.
A great day . . . after doing a little
gratuitious tourism downtown, we headed to the Anchor Brewing Company, home of the
delicious Anchor Steam Beer among many others. We took the tour, which was
fantastic, and were allowed to sample each of the beers that Anchor makes . .
. needless to say, Ed left happy.
The weather was awful . . . So we made a
lemon into lemonade and took the BART to
Berkeley and visited Amoeba Music,
Rasputin Records, Cody's Books, and
Moe's Books among others. It was a lot
of fun, and I picked up some more music to add to the collection.
An absolutely amazing day, despite having
the worst storm SF had seen in three years . . . I was able to meet up with a
good friend of mine and we spent the day together. After having lunch together
we saw Chocolat
at the Sony Theatres Metreon downtown.
It was a great movie -- the kind that leaves you with smile on your face.
Wine touring ... oh yes, wine touring. We took
advantage of the most beautiful day presented us on the trip to trek out to
the Napa Valley and visit three wineries. First we visited Domaine Chandon a maker of fine
sparkling white wines. Next we went to Robert Mondavi Winery which was
absolutely beautiful. They are makers of still wines, and critically acclaimed
ones at that. Finally, we briefly visited Clos Pegase which had beautiful gardens.
Another tourist day. We visited Coit tower,
the campus of The University of California at
San Francisco and then had lunch at a brew pub in the Haight-Ashbury
district. After taking the MUNI back to
my brother's place, we relaxed for the rest of the evening.
We flew back . . . a long flight that got us
home around 8:00 P.M.
So, you ask, what's new with Ed? Well, I am currently on
winter vacation, and loving it. This past semester was a good one which
actually saw my GPA increase, always a good thing. During the break, I have been
spending time with friends and family, enjoying having little to do in the
evenings. During the day, I have been working at Finnegan, Henderson, et al. building more
database driven cool stuff in ColdFusion. This is my last week at
home, but I will not be making the trek back to Ithaca just yet. I will be
visiting my brother Andy in sunny San Francisco where the weather will be
significantly warmer than the frigid Washington D.C. metropolitan area,
or the almost arctic Ithaca, NY. Believe me, I'm looking forward to
that. Other than my upcoming travel plans, I'm just enjoying a little
respite before I dive headlong into another semester of Electrical Engineering
featuring big scary equations.
Happy new year to all; I will see you
next week.
One prelim down . . . one twenty page paper to go. That pretty much sums
up my week. I am working on my report regarding the future of Moore's Law for my
Engineering Communications class (due Friday) and trying to get any problem sets
out of the way. This is also initiation week at my fraternity so I will be especially short on
time.
For all you radio fans, fear not! My shift returns to Wednesday this
week ensuring that no man, woman, or child in the Ithaca area will go without
the program that has given them so much enjoyment. Next week is not so clear, as
I have two prelims. It is not
yet clear if I will be able to switch shifts with someone -- so stock up on your
Ed while you can.
This past weekend I took a road-trip to Syracuse, New York
with four of my best friends from WVBR (alumni and current staff). We had a
great time. All I can tell you is that Syracuse will never be the same. That
about wraps it up for this week in the life of your favorite guy named Ed. More
to come . . . later.
This week I am preparing for a prelim in EE 315. It will be on Friday,
bright and early in the morning. Also I will be making a presentation on Lake
Source Cooling for my Engineering Communications 350 course on Wednesday.
On
the WVBR front, you will be able to get your
weekly dose of Ed on the radio this Thursday from 3-7. Also for those of you who
cannot hear the 3 kW signal emanating
from high atop Hungerford Hill in Ithaca, you can listen on the internet, here. With all this excitement, I
probably won't be home very much, so if you need to contact me, e-mail and my pager are the best ways to do so.
This week I will be on the air on Thursday afternoon, this is to help
someone who needed to switch shifts. Next week, I will be doing Thursday again
as a result of a prelim that I have that day.
This will be a very busy week
as I have two papers that I need to finish in addition to activities that I need
to participate in. I will be up on campus doing work most of the week. Paging me
will probably be the best way to get in contact.
This week I will be on the air at WVBR on Wednesday, as usual, from 3-7.
Training at the station has been going well. We welcomed three new trainees to
our staff on Sunday. I was awarded "Jok of the Week" at VBR for my Jok Training
efforts and am enjoying the new Sister Hazel CD that was given to me for that
honor.
I will be presenting an explanation of the operation of a NAND gate
for my Engineering Communications class this week. Other than that, the same old
problem sets will be due as usual.
Fall break has come to a close, and I return to Ithaca on the 10th. The
break provided a much needed respite from the everyday demands of school. My
radio shift should be this Wednesday from 3:00-7:00 PM. This week I will be
getting back into the groove after the barrage of prelims last I was faced with
last week.
I finally have a local phone line from Verizon
(I asked for one 1.5 months ago). The number is (607) 273-4425. Feel free to
leave a message.
Two prelims remain this week . . .
I have three prelims this week. EE 315 on Monday,
COMM 120 on Wednesday, and EE 301 on Thursday.
